Advice for booking domestic travel in Thailand

Thanks to a well-developed infrastructure, travelling between different destinations in Thailand is easy to arrange. With Bangkok located in the centre of the country, travel from the Thai capital is convenient no matter which direction you are travelling in. Internal flights are good value for money and on some long-distance routes, there is also the option to take the overnight sleeper train or a VIP bus.

Internal flights in Thailand

Whether you’re travelling north to Chiang Mai, east to Trat (for Ko Chang) or south to Ko Samui or Phuket, domestic carriers in Thailand connect destinations across the country. Fares represent excellent value especially when booked in advance.

There are two airports in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). If you need to transfer between the two airports, allow at least an hour. Flights can be booked online via any of Thailand’s domestic carriers. Travel agents in Thailand can also help with flights and booking counters can be found at airports should you need to find a flight at short notice.

Thailand trains

Train tickets can be purchased in person at any main railway station in Thailand or via the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) website (information in Thai and English). You won’t need to book in advance for shorter journeys, especially if you’re travelling in third-class seats. However, for popular overnight sleeper routes such as Bangkok-Chiang Mai, it’s advisable to book in advance. This is even more important during the high season months and in the lead-up to public holidays such as Songkran and the New Year holiday period.

In January 2023, most of the main train services moved from the old Bangkok Hua Lamphong station to the new station known as Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in the Bang Sue area of Bangkok.

Thailand buses

Bus tickets can be purchased in person at the departure bus station. Although they can also be purchased online via the different bus companies, the booking system is geared towards Thai travellers rather than overseas tourists. As a tourist, you may find it easier to buy bus tickets through a tour office in Thailand or via a third-party booking service such as 12GoAsia or Bookaway.

Thailand boats and ferries

Ferries and boats can be easily booked in person once you’re in Thailand, which also allows for some flexibility if you decide to change your travel plans at the last minute. Check reviews and safety procedures of the company you intend to use, just like with buses.

Insider tips

When buying tickets in person, you may be asked to show your passport.

It’s a good idea to carry a sweatshirt or light jacket as the air-con on long-distance buses and trains can get uncomfortably cool very quickly (blankets are usually provided on these routes).

Buses, trains, and planes tend to get busier around the dates of public holidays, particularly Songkran and New Year, so booking tickets in advance is highly recommended.

Keep in mind that boat and ferry times may change due to weather or demand, so always plan your travel connections accordingly.
