June is one of the green season (rainy season months) in Thailand. While it’s true that there is an increased chance of rainfall for many areas of the country, it doesn’t mean that it rains all day, every day. Far from it. With plenty of good weather and fresher conditions compared to the preceding hot season months, the green season can be a wonderful time to visit Thailand.
June weather
If you’re planning a trip to Thailand in June, you can expect to see a shower or two, but you should also experience lots of sunshine and warm weather. If you’re planning a beach holiday, the weather patterns in June vary depending on the coast you choose to visit. The Andaman Coast, which includes Krabi and Phuket, experiences higher levels of rainfall due to the south-west monsoon over the Andaman Sea. On the other hand, the Gulf Coast, which includes Hua Hin and Ko Samui, sees lower levels of rainfall, making it an excellent option for a beach break during June.
Where to visit in June
If you want to explore the Thai countryside, June is an ideal time to visit North Thailand. March and April can be stifling due to the heat and dry conditions, but the summer showers in June bring freshness to the countryside, making it an enjoyable time to visit locations in the north including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Sukhothai, and Nan.
If you’re planning a beach holiday during June, the islands of Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, and Ko Tao are all great options. On the mainland, the beaches of Chumphon, Hua Hin, Khanom in Nakhon Si Thammarat province are also worth considering.
On the opposite Andaman Coast, you can expect a higher level of rainfall and it’s also important to note that some boat services to the Andaman Sea islands are temporarily suspended during the low season months from mid-May to mid-October.
Events and festivals in June
One of the most popular Thai festivals in June is the Phi Ta Khon Ghost Festival, which takes place in Loei in north-east Thailand. This ancient festival is a boisterous and ribald affair making it a lot of fun. Another event to look out for is the Hua Hin Jazz Festival, which is typically hosted in June. And, if you’re a fruit lover, you’ll be happy to know that various tropical fruits are in season during June with local fruit festivals held in the eastern provinces of Chanthaburi, Rayong, and Trat to celebrate the harvest.
