When you visit Thailand, it’s important to be aware of the regulations for carrying medication. To ensure a hassle-free trip, take time to read our advice below which covers everything you need to know.
Packaging
If you are travelling with prescribed drugs to or from Thailand, you should keep the medicine in the original packaging which shows the labels. You should also carry with you a letter from the medical professional who prescribed the drugs.
What medicine is allowed?
You are allowed to bring medicine into Thailand which is for personal use and which doesn’t contain controlled drugs (see list of controlled drugs here). If you are travelling as a tourist, the quantity should not exceed 90 days supply. You will need a permit for any medicine which contains:
- Codeine
- Dihydrocodeine
- Hydrocodone
- Methadone
- Morphine
- Oxycodone
- Pethidine
- Tapentadol
- Tilidine
- and more (see the full list here)
Applications for a permit* should be made at least two weeks in advance of travel. You can apply online here:
https://permitfortraveler.fda.moph.go.th/nct_permit_main/
*Please note, applications should be made via PC/laptop and not on a smartphone. Permits will be sent by email. Print out the permit and carry it with you when you travel to/from Thailand.
Although cannabis regulations have been eased in Thailand, it remains illegal to bring cannabis or hemp into Thailand or take it out of the country.

Flying from South Africa to Thailand
Some destinations have stricter rules compared to Thailand (e.g. Dubai, Singapore). If you are travelling to Thailand via another country, you should check with your airline and the relevant local authorities to see what is or isn’t permitted.

Pharmacies in Thailand
In some cases, medicine which is prescription-only in South Africa may be available over the counter in Thai pharmacies. Brand names can differ, but the active ingredients and purpose of use may be the same. English-speaking pharmacists in Thailand are often helpful, especially in main cities and resort areas.
